Here's a short explanation (from Wikipedia) to explain to future Erasmus students from the KHLeuven the difference between a seminar and a lecture:
"a seminar has the function of bringing together small groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in which everyone present is requested to actively participate. It is essentially a place where assigned readings are discussed, questions can be raised and debates can be conducted"
"a lecture is an oral presentation intended to present information or teach people about a particular subject. Lectures are used to convey critical information, history, background, theories and equations. Usually the lecturer will stand at the front of the room and recite information relevant to the lecture's content"
So in lectures you’re in a big room full of students (the lecturer wouldn’t even notice if you’re not in the room) where you can either pay attention and make notes on the slides you get when you enter, or you can daydream about anything you want. But when you have a seminar you’re in a small classroom with only ten till fifteen students where you have to do group works, case studies, debates and some other assignments the teacher is happy to give you.
P.S. the photo I added isn’t mine, it’s just one I found on the internet to demonstrate how a lecture theatre looks like
